When to Plant Spinach Seeds
Spinach is a cold-hardy, tender-leaf crop. Directly sow seeds in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. For a fall harvest, plant in late summer, making sure the soil has cooled sufficiently for proper growth.
Where to Plant Spinach Seeds
Plant spinach seeds in a sunny spot with well-draining, average soil for optimal growth.
How to Plant Spinach Seeds
Sow approximately 12 spinach seeds per foot in a row, or sprinkle them over a wide row or bed. Plant the seeds half an inch deep, press them gently into the soil, and water lightly. Seedlings should emerge in 7 to 14 days, depending on conditions. Ensure soil temperature stays below 70º F for optimal germination. Once seedlings reach one to two inches tall, thin them to four to six inches apart. If growing for baby spinach, thinning is not needed.
How to Care for Spinach
Keep spinach plants well-watered during dry spells to encourage growth. Aim for about one inch of water per week during the growing season. If using overhead sprinklers, water early in the day to allow the foliage to dry before evening, which helps reduce the risk of disease.
How to Harvest Spinach
Harvest spinach once the outer leaves are about three inches long or reach your preferred size. You can either cut the whole plant at the base or pick leaves layer by layer. Be sure to harvest before the leaves become too large, as they can turn bitter once they mature.
