When to Plant Lettuce Seeds

Lettuce thrives in cool weather, so avoid planting during the heat of summer. However, since many varieties mature quickly, you can often harvest multiple crops in both spring and late summer.

Where to Plant Lettuce Seeds

Lettuce grows best in full sun, but in hot climates, some shade can be beneficial. Choose a location with well-draining soil for optimal results.

How to Plant Lettuce Seeds

To start lettuce seeds, either indoors or outdoors, sprinkle the seeds in rows or containers and cover lightly with soil. If starting indoors, cover the containers with a plastic bag to create warmth, similar to a greenhouse. Sprouts should appear within 7-10 days. Once sprouted, remove the plastic and provide ample light. When seedlings develop true leaves, transplant them into individual containers. Harden off seedlings about a week before outdoor transplanting. For outdoor beds, thin or transplant lettuce to the recommended spacing: 4 inches for leaf lettuce, 8 inches for loose-head varieties, and 16 inches for firm-head types.

How to Harvest Lettuce

Harvest lettuce when it reaches full size but is still slightly immature for the best flavor. You can harvest by removing outer leaves while allowing the inner leaves to continue growing. For Butterhead and Romaine varieties, pull up the whole plant or cut it at the base. Crisphead lettuce should be picked when the center feels firm. Note that crisper varieties are less heat-tolerant. Lettuce is cold-tolerant but should be protected from wind. Keep the soil consistently moist, as lettuce has high water transpiration. If leaves wilt, increase watering. Hand weed carefully to avoid damaging the shallow roots.
